To be a part of this project, I would like each model (that's right, you'll be a model now) to select a tattoo to be photographed. If you have multiple tattoos, don't be surprised if I try to wield my veto power for one that I really like! That said, I want this project to be as special to everyone who takes part in it as it is to me, so odds are I'll defer to your choice.
Each model's tattoo will be professionally photographed (I do this for a living, you know). Some photos will be color and some will be black and white. I envision both close-ups and wider shots. You may get a close up, or a wide shot, or both. While that decision will be mine, I will certainly consider the wishes of each model.
Each model will be asked to describe the tattoo and the significance of it. I see this as being almost as important as the photograph, so I'll ask each model to put some thought into their description. Each model will receive a full resolution, fully edited file of their photograph and a big "thank you" from me.
Now, in case you're wondering how much I'm hoping to make on this project, let me tell you: I don't want to make a dime. Given the driving force behind the project, I just don't think that would be right. But I would like the project to see a profit.
I'm going to compile the photographs and stories into a book. I don't know what the title of it will be, although I have a working title that I do kinda' dig. The plan is to sell the book at a price to be determined (based on how many people want it and how many I have to order to get price breaks, etc.). Every single penny left over, after the production-related costs (shipping, printing, etc), will be donated to a cancer charity in the name of everyone involved in the project. After all, the more I look at what this project can be, and hopefully will be, it's glaringly obvious that this project is so much bigger than me.
Only 80 models will be photographed. My father was 80 years old when he died, so that number is not at all flexible. But, it's just about the only thing that's not flexible. I would love to be in a position where I have to turn people away.
The cost to each model, monetarily, will be nothing. A small investment of your time and your words is your price of admission.
Even though I'm in northeast Florida, don't allow that to dissuade you from wanting to take part in this. I travel a bit and wouldn't necessarily have an aversion to a road trip to shoot the right tattoo or to include the right story. I can also set up a shoot if you're from out of the area but will be visiting.
Oh, and I should probably point out that, by the time this project is completed (which could be in excess of a year), I fully expect to have not one, but two tattoos. I'll be photographed for the book but will not be included in the 80 model count.
If you're reading this and don't contact me, and I know you have some bitchin' tattoos, you might as well get ready for me to approach you for this.
The target completion date for this project is December 31, 2021. Hopefully, it will be finished long before that.
So, if you genuinely would like to take part in this project, or know someone who would, I would ask that you e-mail me at steve@steveparrphotography.com. While your e-mail will be simply to let me know that you'd like to take part, please feel free to include a snapshot of the tattoo(s) you're considering, as well as a quick story behind it.
